Multi

GW Hannaway & Associates is very excited about producing a multimedia project for parents dealing with the important subject of early detection in children with mild to profound hearing loss. We are a pioneering firm in image processing and video production. As a digital imaging service, we are recognized as one of the premiere laboratories in the country. Our clients include NASA, The National Geographic Society and Lockheed Martin. GWH&A; works with producers, editors, 3-D animators, videographers and multi-media specialists.

GWH&A; has found, through intense research, that there is a need for an easily accessible, comprehensive guide addressing all issues related to the deaf and hard of hearing community. Through some organizations and government agencies, parents are given information packets. Most of them are not properly organized, are repetitive, and neglect issues involving newborns.

Here’s our plan to produce a multi phase project educating and serving parents of newly diagnosed children.

Phase 1

A 30 minute video that is targeted to parents when they are first told their child has a hearing loss. Issues that will be addressed include:

  • Emotional anxiety such as grief, anger, confusion, fright, etc.
  • Explanations of what hearing loss is and the varying degrees
  • Types of testing and how the loss was detected
  • What kinds of hearing aids are available
  • How to deal with and stimulate your baby
  • The social interaction of children with a hearing loss
  • Types of educational facilities/therapy available for all ages
  • Details of what an audiogram is
  • How to read the audiogram
  • How hearing aids work and how to maintain maximum efficiency
  • Resources that are available to the deaf community nation wide
  • Alternatives to hearing aids (i.e. cochlear implants, assistive hearing devices)

Phase 2

A 30 minute video cassette that would go deeper into the subjects covered in phase 1. It will include:

  • Details of what an audiogram is
  • How to read the audiogram
  • How hearing aids work and how to maintain maximum efficiency
  • Resources that are available to the deaf community nation wide
  • Alternatives to hearing aids (i.e. cochlear implants, assistive hearing devices)

Phase 3

An interactive CD-ROM, including all information known about the deaf and hard of hearing community. This CD-ROM will be fully inclusive. Some of the highlights will include:

  • A computer-animated fly through the ear (how is it structured and how does it work?)
  • What the world sounds and feels like with a hearing loss
  • A real life scenario, modeling a hearing loss
  • How ear molds are made and how hearing aids work
  • A complete database of public and private organizations that specialize in hearing loss. This database will include organizations, schools, associations, on-line material, and government resources nation wide and in Canada. To our knowledge there is currently no such database.

Our overall goal is to provide a resource for families, to comfort, assist and enlighten at a time when there is no where else to turn. Where do we go from Hear?’s three phase multi-media project will give these families an invaluable resource.

If you are an organization that helps and provides information for the hearing impaired community please contact us. We want to HEAR about what you do and include you in our resource outlets.
